Bolivar I am

This is not a movie review.
Back in 2002, there was a film festival in Delhi, with many theaters showing movies from across the world. Amongst the movies shown, Bolivar I Am ( Bolivar Soy Yo) was a special one.
The film's protagonist goes delusional, believing himself to be Simon Bolivar, following his dream of Gran Columbia.
Who was Simon Bolivar?
IF it wasn't for the history, he could have been a mythical hero, endowed with superpowers. He led Venezuela, Panama, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia and Bolivia to independence. He wrote constitutions, country is named after him,  currency is named after him, he is the ideologue for half of the South American continent- all in short 47 years.

Why isn't there is more of him in the history books at school?

Road,Movie

Normally, i watch a movie, appreciate it, may be watch again ( V for Vendetta, Vanilla Sky), discuss with friends (Mullholland Drive), inadvertently pick a dialogue or two ( Lucky Number Slevin), try to draw parallels (Dev D- Trainspotting), quiz about it (Sholay). Yet, i cant think of a time when i have written about a movie. Road,Movie then, is the first one to be so. Its not as if i watched the movie yesterday and was so impressed that i couldnt suppress the need to write about it. It been almost a week. While watching the movie, the deja vu started going round and round and round my head, until i clamped it to One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabrel Garcia Marquez. However, it was Anas's question: What does the punctuation mark in the title of the movie mean? that enveloped me. Here are few of my interpretations: 1. Dev Benegal made English, August a decade back. May be the comma is his leit motif. 2. Road movie is a genre of movies which are structured such: hero on a journey,...

General Elections 2009

My first political utterance was 'Janta Party Jindabad!' i was two years old then. From 1980 when the Janta Party fell apart like a pack of cards refusing to stay in the same deck, to 1984 when the sympathy wave for Congress (I) swept the opposition of their feet, there has been an talk amongst political analysts of India moving towards a two party dominance. Slowly the opinions changed towards an era of co-alition governments with Janta Dal coughing up VP Singh as Prime Minister in 1989 with support of Left Front (Janta Dal was itself a part of National Front) and BJP. Then on, there was no turning back. Outside support, inside support, on the fence support, active supoprt, passive support, conditional support, unconditional support, support if burkina faso doesnt invade reunion islands, friendly opposition if finance minister takes a bath before coming to Loksabha and other such variants led the bloom of democracy. In 2004, i thought the consolidation towards bi-polar politic...
